I was fortunate to draw a once in a lifetime bison tag on the Henry Mountains in Utah. I researched many guide services and only found one, Henry Mountain Outfitters, that offered a remote camp and using horses to access the entire hunting area. The other guide services offered the use of four wheelers and side by side vehicles. The Henry Mountains Outfitters offer a unique hunting experience for a free range bison. To take full advantage of the opportunity, you need to get off the limited roads and hunt the vast road less areas.
Henry Mountain Outfitters knowledge of the area was extensive. These folks live in Hanksville and are on the mountain every day. They knew how to navigate the low desert areas to the high peaks. They were able to take me to areas that were not reasonably accessible without horses.
I have hunted in Alaska, New Zealand and Africa. The hunting camp they provided was first rate. They thought of everything. The wall tent had a cot, a wood stove with a daily supply of wood, a propane light and water and other beverages in a cooler stored just outside the tent.
The food was superb. After a long day of hunting, it was nice to come back to camp enjoy the fire and have a good meal.
After a successful hunt, Henry Mountain Outfitters were prepared to take care of the bison and pack it off the mountain (which took considerable effort considering we were at 9500 feet).
I give Henry Mountain Outfitters (Chris and Kathryn Hoggatt) 5 stars. They worked hard to provide me an opportunity for a successful once in a lifetime hunting experience.
